HONOLULU — The state Department of Health is warning the public to avoid a Kauai river and part of a bay because a landslide at Mount Waialeale has made the water muddy.

The department said Wednesday people should stay out of the Wailua River and part of Wailua Bay near the river mouth.

The department says dead animals, fecal matter, broken trees and other debris may be in the water.

Officials were alerted to the water when the Surfrider Kauai Chapter told the Clean Water Branch the Wailua River was turbid even though there was very little rain in the area.
